Masuko Ushioda

Violinist. Born in Mukden, Manchukuo (Shenyang, China). Studied at Toho Gakuen Music School for Children under Hideo Saito and Hidekazu Yoshida, and made his debut at the age of 13 performing with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from Toho Gakuen High School, he studied under Anna Ono and Hideo Saito, and studied at the Leningrad Conservatory. In 1963, he won fifth place at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, and from 1964, he studied under Joseph Szigeti in Montreux, Switzerland. In 1966, he won second place at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, attracting worldwide attention. He performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and others, and served as a professor at the New England Conservatory in Boston, the oldest music college in the United States. She was also a key member of the Saito Kinen Orchestra led by Seiji Ozawa and the Mito Chamber Orchestra. She died of leukemia in Cambridge, Massachusetts in May 2013. Her husband was cellist Lawrence Lesser, former president of the New England Conservatory.

ヴァイオリニスト。旧満州国奉天市（中国瀋陽市）に生まれる。斎藤秀雄，吉田秀和らの桐朋学園子供のための音楽学校で学び，13歳で東京交響楽団との共演で演奏家デビュー。雙葉学園中等部をへて桐朋学園高校で小野アンナ，斎藤秀雄に師事，同校を卒業後，レニングラード音楽院に留学，1963年エリザベート王妃国際音楽コンクールで５位に入賞，1964年から，スイスのモントルーでヨーゼフ・シゲティに師事した。1966年チャイコフスキー国際コンクールで２位に入り世界的に注目された。ロンドン交響楽団，シカゴ交響楽団，ボストン交響楽団等と共演，アメリカで最も古い音楽大学であるボストンのニューイングランド音楽院の教授を務めた。小澤征爾率いるサイトウ・キネン・オーケストラや水戸室内管弦楽団の主要メンバーでもあった。2013年５月マサチューセッツ州ケンブリッジで，白血病で死去した。夫はニューイングランド音楽院の元学長でチェリストのローレンス・レッサー。
