A perennial plant of the Primulaceae family (APG classification: Primulaceae). In May, it produces a flower stalk about 10 cm in diameter with several flowers at the top. It has five petals like the primrose, about 2 cm across, and is pale purple-pink in color. It has several leaves that grow near the base of the plant, are round overall, roughly uneven, and have shallowly incised edges. It grows wild in the Chubu region and west of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It is named after the primrose that grows on rocky cliffs in valleys. It should be potted in coarse sand and placed in partial shade in summer. [Tsuneo Torii March 22, 2021] Their numbers are declining in their natural habitat, and Yamagata City in Gifu Prefecture has enacted a conservation ordinance.
