Plover (Chidori) - Plover

Japanese: チドリ(千鳥) - チドリ
Plover (Chidori) - Plover
A general term for birds of the family Plover. Wingspan is usually 10-25cm. Body color is white on the underside, brown on the back, and many have black bands on the head and chest. Widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions of the world, 12 species in Japan. Five species breed: the Sand Plover, which is common on seashores; the Little Plover, which lives on seashores and riverbanks; the Black-streaked Plover, which lives further upstream in the river than the previous species; and the Black-eared Plover and the Lapwing. The rest are winter birds or migrants. They often live in colonies from autumn to winter. They make shallow depressions on the ground of riverbanks and lay pebbles and shells to make nests. They lay 3-4 eggs. The color and markings of both the eggs and chicks are similar to pebbles. During the breeding season, the parents spread both wings and drag them on the ground as if they are injured, in a so-called wound simulation, in order to protect their predator. There are also species in other closely related families called plovers, such as the Stone Plover and the Swallow Plover.
