A plain-weave cotton fabric woven in a checkered pattern. Most are one color on a white background, but some are two or three colors. They are woven using relatively thin single-strand cotton threads of count 20 to 50, giving them a dense texture similar to poplin. They are dyed with naphthol and sulfur dyes, which have strong light fastness. Some say that the name gingham comes from gingang (a Malay word for checked cotton fabric) or Gingamp, the local name for a place where it was woven in France, but there is no consensus. In Japan, most are produced near Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, and are widely used for summer women's and children's clothing, blouses, pajamas, etc. [Kadoyama Yukihiro] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
