350-428 Antiochene theologian and biblical hermeneutic scholar. Bishop of Mopsouestia in Cilicia (since 392). Considered the teacher of Nestorius. In interpreting the Bible, he rejected the Alexandrian school's metaphorical interpretation and insisted on a strict historical interpretation of every word. His teaching on the incarnation of Christ was condemned at the Council of Ephesus (431), and later he was denounced as a Nestorian heretic at the Second Council of Constantinople (553) as one of the so-called "Trilogy."
