CH 2 N 2 (42.04). An aliphatic diazo compound. There is resonance between the following two structures: H2C ==: ↔ H2 -≡N: N -Nitrosomethylurethane CH 3 N(NO)COOC 2 H 5 or N -nitroso- p -toluenesulfonic acid- N -methylamide is prepared by treating with potassium hydroxide. It is a yellow, odorless, highly toxic gas. Its melting point is -145 °C and boiling point is -24 °C. It is soluble in ether and dioxane. It is used in the O -methylation of carboxylic acids and phenolic hydroxy groups, C -methylation via epoxidation of ketones, and other reactions. It also produces methylene free radicals by photolysis of diazomethane. Concentrated solutions are explosive, so it is usually used in ether. Grinding tools should be avoided on rough glass surfaces, as they are prone to inducing explosions. CH2N2(42.04).
