A small perennial plant of the family Malvaceae. Taxonomically, it is a unique plant with one genus and one species, which is considered to be an independent family. It is widely distributed in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. In Japan, it grows in the dark forests of Honshu, north of the Kinki region, and Hokkaido. It has a thin, white underground stem, and looks weak overall. It is about 10 cm tall, and the basal leaves are about the same height and are divided into many leaflets. The stem leaves are divided into three lobes, and only one pair grows halfway up the stem. In spring, it produces small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers in a head-like cluster at the top of the stem.
