Grape moth (Paranthrene regalis)

Japanese: ブドウスカシバ(葡萄透翅) - ブドウスカシバ（英語表記）Paranthrene regalis

An insect of the family Sesiidae in the order Lepidoptera. Wings span 3-3.5cm. The forewings are reddish brown, and the outer edges and transverse veins of the hindwings are reddish brown, but most of the wings are transparent. The abdomen has an orange-yellow band on a black background. It appears in May and June, and is a diurnal flying insect that does not fly to lights. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and northeastern China. The larvae feed on the new shoots and leaf stalks of grapes and Siberian vine. When they penetrate thin branches, the area swells up and becomes a gall. They appear once a year, overwintering as mature larvae, pupating in late April the following spring, and emerging in about 10 days.

鱗翅目スカシバガ科の昆虫。翅の開張3～3.5cm。前翅は赤褐色，後翅は外縁部と横脈上が赤褐色だが，翅の大部分が透明。腹部は黒地に橙黄色帯がある。5～6月に出現し，昼飛性で灯火には飛来しない。北海道から九州までと，朝鮮半島，中国東北部に分布する。幼虫はブドウ，エビヅルなどの新梢（しんしよう）や葉柄などに食入する。細い枝に潜入すると，その部分が膨れて虫こぶとなる。年1回の発生で，老熟幼虫で越冬し，翌春4月下旬ころ蛹化（ようか），約10日で羽化する。
