A social club established in 1880 (Meiji 13) by people connected with Keio University, including Fukuzawa Yukichi, Obata Tokujiro, Baba Tatsui, and Yano Fumio. The club published the Koson Magazine, with the goal of sharing knowledge and consulting on world affairs. Politically, the club was in conflict with the Liberal Party, and in 1881 it published the Kosonsha Constitution Draft, a privately drafted constitution, which became a major support base for the Constitutional Reform Party, which was formed the following year. Later, Kadono Ikunoshin, Asabuki Eiji, Kamata Eikichi and others became central figures, and notable members included businessmen from the Mitsui zaibatsu such as Nakamigawa Hikojiro, Muto Sanji, and Ikeda Nariaki, politicians such as Ozaki Yukio, Takekoshi Yosaburo, Inukai Tsuyoshi, and Minoura Katsundo, and journalists such as Honda Seiichi and Koyama Kango. During the Taisho Political Crisis (1913), they formed the Constitutional Protection Association and played a leading role in the first constitutional protection movement. It continues to function as a social club to this day. [Koji Sakaezawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
