A stringed instrument used in Chinese gagaku music. It belongs to the zither family and has a wider body than the Japanese koto. It usually has 25 strings, but there are 23 to 27 strings, and Chinese mythology tells of a man named Pangxi who made one with 50 strings. A 116 cm long and 40 cm wide instrument was discovered in the Mawangdui Han Tombs (2nd century BC) in Changsha, Hunan Province, and a larger one measuring 2 meters long and 80 cm wide was discovered in later times. There is evidence that it was introduced to Japan, and the tail plate of a 24-string koto remains in the Shosoin Repository. It is played in the same way as the koto, with a pillar set up and the strings plucked with the right hand. In China, it is always played with a kin, which gave rise to the expression "koto setsu aiwasu" (harmony between two people) as an analogy for a loving and harmonious relationship between a husband and wife.
