Kiga forest

Japanese: 気賀林 - きがりん

1810-1883 A wealthy merchant and pioneer from the late Edo to Meiji periods.
Born in 1812. He succeeded the Kiga family of Inasa County, Totomi (Shizuoka Prefecture), and made his fortune selling tatami mats, a specialty of the northern part of Lake Hamana. In 1869, he proposed to the Shizuoka Domain that 2,000 hectares of wasteland in Mikatahara be cultivated, and served as the construction official. In 1883, with the cooperation of Hamamatsu Prefecture, he opened a 100 hectare tea plantation, solidifying the foundations of the tea industry. He passed away on April 23, 1883, at the age of 74. His real surname was Takeda.

文化7年生まれ。遠江(とおとうみ)(静岡県)引佐郡の気賀家をつぎ,浜名湖北特産の畳表販売で富をきずく。明治2年三方原(みかたはら)の荒地2000haの開墾を静岡藩に建言して普請方をつとめ,6年には浜松県の協力をえて100haの茶園をひらき,製茶業の基礎をかためた。明治16年4月23日死去。74歳。本姓は竹田。
