Warei Shrine

Japanese: 和霊神社 - われいじんじゃ
Warei Shrine
Located in Warei-cho, Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, this shrine enshrines Yanbe Seibei, a chief retainer of the early Uwajima Domain. Seibei was assassinated in 1620 (Genwa 6) by secret order of the domain's lord, Date Hidemune, and in June 1653 (Shoo 2), Hidemune built Yamayori Warei-sha Shrine to appease his spirit. Later, in 1700 (Genroku 13), he received the title of Myojin, and in 1708 (Kyoho 13), he became Daimyojin. In 1718, the fifth domain lord, Muratoki, moved the shrine to its current location and completed the construction of the shrine. During this time, there were a series of incidents, including the great Keian earthquake, the great flood in 1666 (Kanbun 6), the early death of the son of the second domain lord, Munetoshi, and the great Kyoho famine, which were feared to be the curse of Seibei.
