American politician. Third president (1801-1809). Participated in the Continental Congress in 1775, and was one of the drafters of the Declaration of Independence. After serving as Governor of Virginia and Minister to France, he served as Washington's first Secretary of State from 1790 to 1793, organized the Republican Party (the precursor to the Democratic Party), and served as Vice President (1797-1800) under John Adams, and then as President. His achievements include the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and the promotion of education. After retiring from politics, he devoted himself to popular education, founded the University of Virginia (1825), and is known as the father of American democracy.
