An error that occurs in the fields of computers and communications. To do this, it is necessary to add redundant data to the information being transmitted, and while increasing the amount of redundant data makes it possible to correct more errors, it also reduces transmission efficiency, so it is necessary to select an error correction code that suits the application.

コンピューターや通信の分野で発生する誤り。０や１で表されるデジタルデータがマイクロ波回線などの通信やディスクへの蓄積の際に，雑音や傷などによって異なったデータに変化する状態をいう。誤り訂正符号（エラー訂正コード）といわれる符号を付加して送ることで，変化したデータの場所を受信側で検出してそれを元に戻すことができる。そのためには，伝送する情報以外に冗長したデータを付加して伝送する必要があり，その冗長データを多くすれば多くの誤りを訂正できる反面，伝送効率を低くするため，用途に合った誤り訂正符号を選択することが必要である。
