1622‐50 A pioneering modern geographer born in Germany. He studied at Königsberg and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, passing his medical exam in 1649, and in the same year published his Latin work The History of the Japanese Kingdom by Elzevir Bookshop in Amsterdam. In 1974 a German translation appeared, followed by a Japanese translation. Although it is a compilation, it is one of the oldest European-language books introducing Japan. In 1650, shortly after Wallenius' early death, his famous magnum opus Geographia Generale was published. In this work, geography is divided into general geography and specific geography (topography), with the former divided into three sections: absolute (dealing with the Earth itself and its regions), relative (dealing with the Earth as a celestial body), and comparative (comparing and examining different regions on Earth).
