Also called Homo soloensis . A fossil human discovered on the river terrace of the Solo River in central Java. Eleven skulls and two tibiae were discovered by C. Haar in 1931-33 from the upper part of the Trinil Formation. According to research by F. Weidenreich, all of these have similar morphologies and are considered to belong to the same group. The skull is long, the bones are generally thick, the supraorbital ridge is developed, the attachment of the nuchal muscle is prominent, and the mastoid process is large. The average brain capacity is reported to be 1100 cm3 . Weidenreich and his colleagues considered this group of human bones to be a transitional stage from early man to archaic man. The age is thought to be the Late Pleistocene due to the large number of mammalian fossils that were found.
