This old town occupies the southern slope of the Izumi Mountains and the basin of the midstream of the Sendai River in Satsuma County, Kagoshima Prefecture. It has been a center of rice cultivation since the feudal era, and tea, tomatoes, strawberries, and livestock are also cultivated. There is also a tea factory. Miyanoshiro Onsen is home to the town. In March 2005, it merged with Tsuruta Town and Satsuma Town in Satsuma County to become a town. It has an area of 145.95 km2 and a population of 17,488 (2003). 鹿児島県薩摩郡,出水(いずみ)山地南斜面と川内(せんだい)川中流の盆地を占める旧町。藩政時代から米作の中心地で,茶,トマト,イチゴなどを栽培,畜産も盛ん。製茶の工場もある。宮之城温泉がある。2005年3月薩摩郡鶴田町,薩摩町と合併し町制。さつま町となる。145.95km2。1万7488人(2003)。
