King Yuhara

Japanese:
King Yuhara
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A member of the imperial family and poet of the Nara period. Grandson of Emperor Tenchi and son of Prince Shiki (Shiki). In 770, his brother Prince Shirakabe ascended to the throne and became Emperor Kōnin, and he was called Prince Yuhara because his brothers and sisters were made princes and princesses, but his history is unclear. Prince Isshino, the Dainagon who died in 805 at the age of 73, was his second son. In the Manyoshu, there remain 19 tanka poems that are estimated to have been written around the early Tenpyo period (after 729) based on their arrangement. He wrote many excellent works, and his poems of scenery and poetry, such as "In the shadow of the mountains, the ducks cry in the calm waters of the Natsumi River in Yoshino" and "In this garden where the white dew is laid, the crickets cry, even though the moon is setting and the heart is still in the evening," show a delicate and graceful style, and his banquet songs such as "Look, my lord, at my sister, with her dragonfly-winged sleeves waving, as I think of her in the depths of the jewel box," and his love poems with "young ladies" show his improvisational and witty talent. During the transitional period to the Tenpyo style of poetry represented by Otomo no Yakamochi, he is seen to have opened up a new style along with Otomo no Sakanoue no Iratsume and others, and he had a considerable influence on Yakamochi. <References> Nakanishi Susumu, "Man'yo Poets/Man'yo Reader 2"
