German novelist. Born the son of a pastor in the Duchy of Saxony, he studied theology in Leipzig, and from 1745 taught poetry, ethics, and rhetoric at the same university, while also working on enlightening creative writing. Due to poor health, he remained single, but he interacted with people from all walks of life, and was revered as a teacher of his time for his sentimental, pious, and gentle personality. In 18th-century Germany, he wrote two volumes of Fables and Tales (1746-48), which were the second most widely read works after the Bible, as well as Didactic Poems and Tales (1754) and Hymns and Odes (1757).

ドイツの小説家。ザクセン公国の牧師の子として生まれ，ライプチヒで神学を修めたのち，1745年から同大学で詩学，倫理学，修辞学を講じ，かたわら啓蒙的な創作に従事。病弱のため独身をとおしたが，あらゆる階層と交わり，感傷的ながら敬虔･温厚な人柄により時代の師表と仰がれた。18世紀ドイツでは聖書に次いでひろく読まれた《寓話と物語》2部(1746‐48)のほかに《教訓詩と物語》(1754)，《聖歌と頌歌》(1757)。
