[Died] December 7, 1815. French army officer in Paris. Also spelled Ney. After working as a clerk in a law office, he joined the French army in 1788. He fought in Jena, Königsberg, and Eylau, and in 1807 he distinguished himself in Friedland. In 1808 he was made Duke of Elchingen, and in 1812 he was given the title of Duke of Moscow for his distinguished service at the Battle of Borodino during the Russian campaign. He led the rearguard in the retreat from Russia. In 1814 he led the generals in calling for Napoleon's abdication, and at the First Restoration he became governor of Besançon. However, in 1515 he became a subordinate of Napoleon, who had fled from Elba, and played a central role in the Battle of Waterloo, which led to him being shot for treason during the Second Restoration.
