Education for training teachers for primary and secondary schools. In Japan, the first national normal school was established in Tokyo in 1872. After that, elementary school teachers were mainly trained at public normal schools (national since 1943) established in each prefecture. Secondary school teachers were mainly trained at the national higher normal school established in 1886, and other teacher training schools. In addition, a supplementary method was used, using teacher certification. After World War II, the method of specific schools was changed, and teacher training was, in principle, conducted at universities based on the Educational Personnel Certification Act. Therefore, in addition to universities that mainly train teachers, general universities also have teacher training courses. In addition, supplementary teacher training institutions have been established.

初・中等学校の教員を養成するための教育。日本では，明治5 (1872) 年に初めて東京に国立の師範学校が設立された。のち小学校教員の養成は各府県に設立された公立の師範学校 (1943以後国立) を中心として行われた。また中等学校教員の養成は 1886年に設置された国立の高等師範学校を中心とし，その他の教員養成学校で行われた。このほか補足的に教員検定による方法もとられている。第2次世界大戦後は特定の学校による方法を改め，教員養成は教育職員免許法に基づき，原則として大学で行われることになった。したがって教員養成を主とする大学のほか，一般の大学でも教職課程を設けて教員養成を行なっている。また補足的に教員養成の機関も設けられている。
