A container for carrying food. According to the Wamyōshō, it was a kareike, a curved food container with an internal partition. It was generally made from thin cypress boards and had two compartments. As the Utsubo Monogatari states, "50 hiwarigo, 50 ordinary hiwarigo," in addition to ordinary hiwarigo, there was something called hiwarigo. Considering that hiwarigo itself was made of cypress, it is difficult to understand how these two were different, but the Kayanoin Suikaku Utaawase (1035) notes that the hiwarigo used on that occasion had legs made of mother-of-pearl on a rosewood base.
