It is one of the Grandes Écoles, France's elite training institutions. It was founded in Paris in 1794 during the French Revolution, with the aim of training high-ranking technical officers, based on the old system's civil engineering and military engineering schools. It originally opened as the École Centrale des Travaux Publics, and was renamed in 1795. The faculty consisted of France's leading scientists of the time, and rigorously educated young people who were selected from all over the country through academic examinations.
