1813‐1900 French philosopher and administrator. Influenced by Aristotle and in concert with Schelling and others, he developed a vitalist view of the universe in opposition to the mechanistic view of the universe that had existed for 200 years since Descartes. Using introspection and analogy, he understood the true nature of all things to be spirit and love, and that the material world is its descending limit, while "habits," which are created by will and entrusted to the body, are the intermediary between the two as spontaneous passivity, and that beauty is the manifestation of spirit and love in the universe. His works include Habit Theory (1838). [Nakata Mitsuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
