…In the neoclassical period, some writers wrote novels in the Maqamat style, such as Muḥammad al-Muwayliḥī (1868-1930)'s Isa bin Hisham, but they placed greater emphasis on poetry, and Pan-Islamic and Arab nationalist ideas were expressed in the qasida style by al-Bārūdī (1839-1904) and Ahmad Shawqi (d. 1932). In the romantic period, Muḥammad Ḥusayn Haykal (1888-1956) published the first novel in the history of Arab literature, Zainab, in 1913. Tawfiq al-Hakim and Taha al-Husayn also published novels one after another. …
