Fujiwara no Akiyori - From Fujiwara no Akiyori
Year of death: Hisayasu 4.1.5 (1148.1.27)
Year of birth: Kaho 1 (1094)
A nobleman in the late Heian period. A powerful vassal of Emperor Toba. Son of Gon Chunagon Fujiwara Akitaka, founder of the Hamuro clan, and the daughter of Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Suetsuna. One theory is that his mother was the daughter of Mino no Kami Minamoto no Yoritsuna. He was called Kujo Tamibukyo. In 1108, he was conferred a peerage, and at the same time, he became Izumo no Kami at the request of his father Akitaka, who was a powerful innkeeper under Emperor Shirakawa. After that, he served as a provincial governor in Tango and Tanba, and further held important posts such as Chugu Gon Daishin, Kurodo no Tomo, and Benkan. In 1131, he was promoted to councilor and ranked among the nobles, and thereafter held the positions of Uhyoe no Kami and Shicho betto. In 1134, he was promoted to Gon Chunagon. In 1139, he was appointed Dazai Gonsotsu (Gon Chunagon) and Dazai Gonsotsu (Gon Commander) and became Tamibukyo (Minister of Civil Affairs) in 1141. In 1148, he became a monk due to illness and died shortly thereafter. As described in the Yuro Kojitsu, he "performed unparalleled service" to the retired Emperor Toba, and was one of the most important people who supported the foundation of Toba's cloistered government. He used the abundant wealth he gained as a provincial governor and as a fiefdom lord in Totomi and Mikawa to build palaces and buildings for the emperor. One of these, Kozen-in, built south of Kujo-bomon and east of Higashi-no-toin, was donated to Emperor Toba and became a branch temple of Anrakuju-in. The scattered fields in Yamashiro Province that Akiyori donated to Kozen-in at this time became the foundation of Haishi-sho (Fukuchiyama City). He had a residence in Kujo North and Higashinotoin East, and it appears as "Akirakyodo" in the map of Tokyo in the "Shugakusho". He also had a residence in Nijo South and Higashinotoin West. A part of his diary "Kuminki" is included in the "Higashiyama Gobunko Kiroku". <References> Yoshihiko Hashimoto "Research on the Heian Aristocratic Society"
