The main structure of a building is constructed by combining and stacking materials of a certain size, such as stone, brick, or concrete blocks. This type of construction has been used since ancient times in Europe and the United States, and brick construction is still widely used today. It is highly fire-resistant and durable, but is vulnerable to earthquakes, so it is not used much in Japan. It is often used in reinforced concrete block construction, where concrete blocks are reinforced with steel bars, or as a mixed structure with reinforced concrete and steel frames.

建築物の主体構造を，石，煉瓦，コンクリートブロックなど，一定の大きさをもつ材料を組合せ，積重ねて造り上げるもの。欧米などでは，古くからこの構造が用いられており，現在でも煉瓦造などは広く愛用されている。耐火性，耐久性に富んでいるが，地震に弱いため，日本ではあまり使用されず，コンクリートブロックを鉄筋で補強した補強コンクリートブロック造や，鉄筋コンクリート，鉄骨などとの混用構造として用いられる場合が多い。
