...A general term for birds in the Laridae family, or one of these. Birds in the Laridae family are generally divided into gulls and terns, with gulls being large, sturdy, with broad wings and short, round tails, while terns (illustration) are small, slender, with narrow wings and long, somewhat swallow-tailed tails. There are about 45 known species of gulls in the world, and 14 species are found in Japan, including the black-headed gull (illustration), herring gull, great black-backed gull, seagull, black-tailed gull (illustration), black-headed gull, and kittiwake.
