...Infection occurs mainly through the oral ingestion of eggs attached to dog hair, but the oncotic larvae hatch in the upper part of the small intestine and penetrate the intestinal wall, forming hydatids in various organs such as the liver, lungs, and brain, which can cause fatal damage to humans (hydatid disease). Hymenolepis nana and H. diminuta are originally parasites of mice, but they can also infect humans, especially children. In some cases, infection occurs through the ingestion of cysts (a type of cyst) in intermediate hosts such as fleas and maize weevils, or through the direct ingestion of eggs, and in some cases, autoinfection can also occur.
