It is a cloudy white liquid containing colloidal sulfur, which was created in 1845 by German pharmacologist and chemist Heinrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Wackenroder (1798-1854) by adding hydrogen sulfide to a concentrated aqueous solution of sulfur dioxide at temperatures below 0 _° C. Colloidal sulfur is produced by the _reaction _2H2S + _SO2 - → _2H2O + _3S _, and this solution contains various polythionates with _the general formula [ _O3SSnSO3 _] 2- ( _n = ₁ , 2, ... ₎ through reactions such as _H2S ₊ _3SO2 - → _H2S4O6 _2H2S ₊ _6SO2 - → _H2S3O6 + _H2S5O6 _3H2S + _9SO2 ^- → _H2S2O6 ₊ _2H2S5O6 .

1845年，ドイツの薬学者，化学者のワッケンローダーHeinrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Wackenroder(1798‐1854)によってつくられた，二酸化硫黄の濃厚な水溶液に0℃以下の低温で硫化水素を通じて得られるコロイド状硫黄を含む白濁液をいう。コロイド状硫黄は，　2H₂S＋SO₂―→2H₂O＋3Sの反応で生じ，この溶液には　H₂S＋3SO₂―→H₂S₄O₆　2H₂S＋6SO₂―→H₂S₃O₆＋H₂S₅O₆　3H₂S＋9SO₂―→H₂S₂O₆＋2H₂S₅O₆等の反応によって，一般式[O₃SS_nSO₃]^2－(n＝1,2，……)で示される各種のポリチオン酸が含まれる。
