[ I ] In the substitution nomenclature of alcohols and phenols, it is a suffix attached to the name of a hydrocarbon or basic heterocycle. An example is shown in the following figure.

The -ol is also found in commonly accepted names such as phenol and cresol. [ II ] In polynuclear complexes, when ^OH- acts as a bridging ligand, it was once called "ol", but this term is no longer used. Complexes with this bridging structure are also called "ol complexes". The following structural formula

was originally called octaammine-μ-diol-dichromium(III) salt, but is now called di-μ-hydroxo-bis(tetraamminechromium(III)) salt.

【Ⅰ】アルコール，フェノールの置換命名法で，炭化水素または基本複素環名に付ける接尾語．例を次図に示す．

フェノール(phenol)，クレゾール(cresol)など慣用名として認められているものにも-olが見られる．【Ⅱ】多核錯体においてOH^－が橋かけ配位子になっているときにオールとよんだことがあるが，現在では用いていない．この橋かけ構造をもつ錯体をオール錯体ともいう．次の構造式

をオクタアンミン-μ-ジオール-ジクロム(Ⅲ)塩のようによんだが，現在では，ジ-μ-ヒドロキソ-ビス(テトラアンミンクロム(Ⅲ))塩という．
