This term is used to describe the environmental pollution of water areas caused by fish and shellfish farming from the perspective of the fishing industry. Aquaculture farms that use shallow coastal waters or rivers and lakes can be damaged by pollution from land, such as industrial and domestic wastewater. On the other hand, as aquaculture becomes more intensive, the accumulation of excrement from farmed organisms and residues of feed can exceed the natural purification capacity, causing deterioration of water quality and bottom sediment, and as a result, reducing aquaculture productivity. In shallow water oyster farms and Akoya pearl farms, repeated use of a certain location can gradually lead to poor growth and meat content of the oysters, and a decline in the quality of the pearls.
