A type of acrobatics. Also called kyokumochi. Lying on one's back with one's legs raised, one manipulates various objects with the soles of one's feet, and skillfully uses one's toes to write, shoot an archery bow, make paper cutouts, play musical instruments, and so on. It appears in Mojie Zukushi, a collection of illustrations from around the Shotoku and Kyoho eras (1716-1736). Around the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804-1830), masters such as Iwamoto Umeyoshi of Nagoya appeared and it became popular. One would spin an open umbrella like a waterwheel, or spin objects such as stones, rice bags, barrels, and tubs, or even people, or kick them up high. The "Kuzu no Ha Shoji no Kyoku" (The Song of the Kudzu Leaf Shoji Screen), a piece by the Tetsuwari Kumazo (later known as Yakichi) troupe, which was famous around the Kaei period (1848-1854), has been passed down to the Kinoshita Circus with almost the same structure. The first Japanese acrobatic troupe to travel to Europe in 1866 (Keio 2) also featured foot artist Hamajo Sadakichi. It can also be seen in the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe and foreign circuses.
