The largest city in the province of Overijssel in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Located near the border with Germany, it is connected to the IJsselmeer by the Twente Canal and the IJssel River. It was granted city rights in 1325, but was only a small settlement before industrialization. It developed in the second half of the 19th century and became the center of the Twente industrial region. Most of the city was destroyed in a fire in 1862, and it was occupied by German troops during World War II, which dealt a heavy blow, but it was rebuilt after the war. It is the center of the Dutch cotton textile industry, and has a thriving trade with the United States. Other industries include metallurgy, rubber products, and tire manufacturing. It is connected to Hengelo in the northwest and forms a metropolitan area. Population: 147,199, metropolitan area: 252,989 (1992 estimate).
