…The missionaries, in order to carry out their duties, made an effort to investigate things in China and gather information, and reported the results to the headquarters of the religious order. Based on this information, the first book on China to appear in Europe was the “De natura da sino” (The Great Kingdom of China) by Augustinian missionary Juan Gonzalez Mendoça (1549-1617?), published in Rome in Spanish in 1585, and was immediately translated into various European languages. The French translation published in Paris in 1588 is particularly famous, and is quoted in the “Essays” by Montaigne, the greatest French writer and philosopher of the time. …
