When it is reduced in a solution of telluric acid with sulfur dioxide, it becomes an amorphous black or silvery gray powder. The silvery gray metallic tellurium obtained by electrolysis or melting has a hexagonal crystal system with a = 4.447 Å, c = 5.915 Å, and the crystal structure is the same as that of gray selenium, with tellurium atoms forming helical chains and weak metallic bond-like interactions between adjacent atoms in different chains. It has a Mohs hardness of 2.5, making it brittle.
