Year of birth: Unknown. Author of readings from the Edo period. His real surname was Sakagami. He was also known as Urabe or Yamamoto. He was commonly known as Tsukuniya Zengoro. He was born into the Itami brewery family of Oshika-ya Ihei, and from an early age was adopted by Tsukuniya Kanzaburo, another Itami brewer and maker of the famous sake "Kenbishi". His biological father was Sakagami Hachifusa, the head of the Oshika-ya family, famous as an Itami-style haiku writer. Like his father, Tsubakien was a book lover and enjoyed literature. Influenced by Tsuga Teisho and Ueda Akinari, he published six readings adapted from Chinese vernacular novels around the An'ei and Tenmei periods (1772-1789). His works include "Okina-gusa", "Kara-kin", and "Ryoken Kigu". 江戸時代の読本作者。本姓は坂上氏。浦辺氏,山本氏とも称する。通称は津国屋善五郎。伊丹の醸造家大鹿屋伊兵衛家に生まれ,幼少のころより,同じく伊丹の醸造家で銘酒「剣菱」の醸造元である津国屋勘三郎の養子となる。実父は伊丹風俳諧作者として著名な大鹿屋当主坂上蜂房であり,その父と同じく椿園も愛書家で,文事を好んだ。都賀庭鐘や上田秋成の影響を受け,中国白話小説を翻案した読本を,安永・天明(1772～89)ごろに6部刊行した。著作には『翁草』『唐錦』『両剣奇遇』などがある。また,随筆『椿園雑話』が写本で伝わる。<参考文献>浜田啓介「伊丹椿園は津国屋善五郎なり」(『近世文学―作家と作品』)
