Washuzan ruins

Japanese: 鷲羽山遺跡 - わしゅうざんいせき

Located at Washuyama Kusumihana in Ohata, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, this is the first notable Paleolithic site in western Japan. Washuyama, a famous tourist spot in Setonaikai National Park, is a long cape that juts out into the sea to the south, and has been severely eroded, with granite exposed across its entire surface. Paleolithic stone tools were discovered in the weathered soil layer of these granite. Examination of the materials began around 1951, and full-scale excavation took place in 1954. The first layer is a topsoil layer of approximately 30 cm that was deposited secondary to the site, and contains a mixture of stone tools such as microblade cores, microblades, knife-shaped stone tools, small knife-shaped stone tools, points, and carving tools.

岡山県倉敷市大畠，鷲羽山久須美鼻にある西日本で最初に注目された旧石器時代遺跡。瀬戸内海国立公園の観光地として著名な鷲羽山は，南に向かって海に長く突出する岬をなしており，浸食がいちじるしく花コウ岩が全面にわたって露出している。旧石器時代の石器は，これら花コウ岩の風化土層中に発見された。1951年ころより資料の検討が行われ，54年に本格的な発掘が行われた。第1層は二次的に堆積した約30cmの表土層であり，この中に細石刃核，細石刃，ナイフ形石器，小型ナイフ形石器，尖頭器，彫器などの石器が混在している。
