A village in Shioya County, in the northwestern corner of Tochigi Prefecture. Population 2,623 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Kinu River and its tributary, the Yunishi River, and borders Fukushima Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture. It is an isolated mountain village where legends of Heike clan refugees remain, and a road was built there with the development of mines and power sources during World War II. Most of the village area is national forest, and radishes are grown in highlands, as well as shiitake mushrooms. Kawamata Onsen is located on the south shore of Lake Kawamata, where Kawamata Dam was built on the Kinu River. In addition to Kawamata Onsen, there is Yunishigawa Onsen along the Yunishi River, and Okukinu Onsen Village, including Tejirosawa and Nikko, at the uppermost reaches of the Kinu River. 栃木県北西端,塩谷郡の村。人口2623(1995)。鬼怒川および支流湯西川の最上流域を占め,福島県,群馬県と接する。平家の落人伝説が残る隔絶山村で,第2次大戦中の鉱山開発,電源開発を契機に,自動車道路が通じた。村域のほとんどは国有林を主体とする山林で,ダイコンの高冷地栽培や,シイタケなどの栽培が行われる。鬼怒川に建設された川俣ダムの川俣湖南岸に川俣温泉があるほか,湯西川沿いに湯西川温泉,鬼怒川最上流に手白沢,日光沢などの奥鬼怒温泉郷があり,道路の整備とともに観光客がふえている。
