A port city on the Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northeastern Germany. Population 72,000 (1991). Industries include fish processing, machinery and building material manufacturing. A powerful Hanseatic city established against the backdrop of medieval eastern colonization, it adopted the city laws of Lübeck in the early 13th century. It grew powerful by taking control of the grain-producing island of Rügen, 1.5 km away on the opposite shore, and in 1370 it was the place where the peace treaty (Treaty of Stralsund) was signed when the Hanseatic League defeated Denmark. It is famous for repelling a siege by Wallenstein's army during the Thirty Years' War. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
