A river that flows north through the southern part of the Okhotsk General Bureau in northeastern Hokkaido. It is a first-class river. It originates from Mount Ahoro in the Akan mountain range, flows north through the mountains, joins the Tsubetsu River and enters the plains, joins the Bihoro River and flows into Lake Abashiri, then flows out from the northern end of the lake, flows east for about 5 kilometers, passes through Abashiri city, and empties into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is 115 kilometers long and has a drainage basin area of 1,380 square kilometers. The main part is directly controlled by the national government, and flood control is managed by the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau. As development in the hinterland expanded, Abashiri Port was built on the river's mouth. [Jiro Okamoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
