A Japanese dictionary. 93 volumes. Compiled by Tanigawa Kotosuga (1709-76). Each of the first, second and third volumes is divided into three parts, each of which is divided into one-character kana words, two-character words, and three-character words, and is arranged alphabetically up to the second syllable. The first volume contains archaic and elegant words, the second volume contains elegant words, and the third volume contains dialects and slang, which indicates the process of compilation. The vocabulary is rich, and the explanations are reasonable and well-founded. The "Outline" at the beginning of the volume provides an overview of the Japanese language, including phonology, kanji, kana, and dialects. It took over 100 years for this book to be published, from the year after Kotosuga's death until 1887 (Meiji 20).
