Japanese: カウプ指数 - かうぷしすう

This is an index used as a reference when checking a baby's nutritional status and physical build (balance between height and weight, whether the baby is obese or thin, etc.). The formula is weight (g) ÷ (height (cm) squared) × 10, but since the standard value for this index changes depending on the baby's age in months, it is difficult to say "this number means the baby is obese." Also, a baby's development is judged comprehensively based on factors such as (1) whether the baby is within the band of the physical growth curve, and (2) whether the baby's height and weight are in a similar position on the physical growth curve graph, so don't get too hung up on the index. Incidentally, the same calculation method is used to determine the physical build of an adult, using the BMI (Body Mass Index) value.

赤ちゃんの栄養状態や体格（身長と体重のバランス／肥満かやせているかなど）をみるときの参考にする指数。体重（g）÷（身長（cm）の２乗）×10が計算式ですが、この指数は月齢によって基準となる値が変わるため、「この数値なら肥満」と言うことが難しいのです。また、赤ちゃんの発育は、（１）身体発育曲線の帯の中にいるか　（２）身体発育曲線のグラフの上で身長や体重が同じような位置にあるかなど、総合的に判断するものですから、指数にこだわりすぎないで。ちなみに大人の体格は通常、同じ計算法によるBMI(Body Mass Index)の値が用いられています。
