...It was sung as a central theme by the troubadours, lyric poets of southern France, and was established on the basis of the feudal system and the religious sentiments of the time. Courtly love, amour courtois, is a later name, but at the time it was called fin'amor, or elegant love, and had strict conditions such as (1) the object must be a married woman of the upper aristocracy (this kind of love is impossible between husband and wife), (2) it must be sensual, not platonic, but not easily satisfied, (3) it must be strengthened by a jealous husband and various obstacles, and (4) it must be a secret love, and the name of the woman in particular must not be revealed. The norms of this highly sublimated erotic love, which governs oneself from the mere satisfaction of sexual instincts and primitive impulses, were summarized, albeit incompletely, in André le Chapelin's Treatise on Love in the early 13th century. ...
