National Reason - Kokkarisei

Japanese: 国家理性 - こっかりせい
National Reason - Kokkarisei
A translation of the French term raison d'état. Also known as reason of state. The idea that a state, as an end in itself, acts with the preservation and strengthening of the state as its highest principle. It arose during the establishment of modern states, especially during the era of absolutism, out of the need to establish national sovereignty as a counterweight to the theological order of the Middle Ages. It later became the principle behind the concept of balance of power in international politics, or power politics.
