Japanese: ゴヨウマツ(五葉松) - ゴヨウマツ（英語表記）Japanese white pine

A species of tall pines of the Pinaceae family found on ridges and mountainside, it is the most common type of bonsai of pines. It reaches a height of 30m and spreads thick branches horizontally. The bark of the trunk is reddish brown and flaky in scales. The needles are 2-6cm long and somewhat soft. In June, numerous purple-red male flowers appear at the base of the new branches (green), and 2-3 pale green or purple-red female cones appear at the tips. The following autumn, the egg-shaped, oblong cones measuring 4-10cm in length ripen and open, scattering two winged seeds from each scale.

尾根筋や山腹にみられるマツ科の高木性五葉松類の1種で，マツ類の盆栽の中では最も多いものである。高さ30mに達し，太枝を水平に張る。幹の樹皮は赤褐色でうろこ状にはげる。針葉は長さ2～6cmで質がやや軟らかい。6月新枝(みどり)の基部に紫紅色の雄花を多数つけ，先端に2～3個の淡緑色または紫紅色の雌球花をつける。翌秋卵状長楕円形で長さ4～10cmの球果が熟し，開いて各種鱗から上に翼のある種子2個ずつを散らす。
