Aarhus - Århus (English spelling)

A city on the east coast of the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark. It is the second largest city in Denmark after Copenhagen, with a population of 288,837 (2002). Located at the mouth of the Aarhus River, the name comes from the Old Danish word aros, meaning river mouth. Around 900, it had already become a trading post connecting with other parts of Denmark and Norway. In 948, a bishop's seat was established, and in 1197, construction of Aarhus Cathedral (93 meters) began. It became one of the centers of Jutland, combining the functions of a religious city and a commercial city, but was devastated by the Protestant Reformation and the wars of the 17th century. In the early 19th century, it was just a small village, but with the construction of the railway in the 1860s, it rapidly industrialized and grew into the largest city in Jutland. Currently, it is a commercial and industrial city and a port city where industries such as beer, textiles, machinery, and food processing are carried out. It is also an educational city with a concentration of educational institutions, including Aarhus University (opened in 1928).
