Rik Wouters

1882‐1916
Belgian painter and sculptor. Born in Mechelen, he studied sculpture at the academy there and in Brussels, and from 1908 he also began painting in a style influenced by the early impressionist Ensor. In 1912 he visited Paris and learned much from Cézanne's style of constructing subjects with brushstrokes. He was mobilized for World War I and died of illness in Amsterdam. His style of painting, which boldly combined transparent and vivid colors to express the joy of living in figures set in intimate environments, made him a leading figure in the so-called Brabant Fauvism movement.

ベルギーの画家，彫刻家。メヘレンに生まれ，同地とブリュッセルのアカデミーで彫刻を学び，1908年から，初期の印象派的なアンソールに影響された様式で絵画も手がける。12年にパリを訪れ，筆触で対象を構築するセザンヌの画風から多くを学んだ。第1次大戦に動員され，アムステルダムで病死。透明で鮮やかな色彩を大胆に取り合わせて親密な環境の中の人物像に生きる喜びを表現する作風を見せ，いわゆる〈ブラバント･フォービスム〉の第一人者となった。
