1882‐1916 Belgian painter and sculptor. Born in Mechelen, he studied sculpture at the academy there and in Brussels, and from 1908 he also began painting in a style influenced by the early impressionist Ensor. In 1912 he visited Paris and learned much from Cézanne's style of constructing subjects with brushstrokes. He was mobilized for World War I and died of illness in Amsterdam. His style of painting, which boldly combined transparent and vivid colors to express the joy of living in figures set in intimate environments, made him a leading figure in the so-called Brabant Fauvism movement.
