Japanese: 身体装飾 - しんたいそうしょく

The practice of applying decorative treatment directly to the body for a variety of aesthetic, religious, and social purposes. Although aesthetic purposes are the most common, the variety of forms of body decoration clearly shows the relativity of cultures regarding aesthetic standards. Body decoration can be divided into temporary decoration such as body painting and permanent decoration such as tattooing, tooth extraction, and various other so-called body modifications, but this article will only cover the former. 審美的，宗教的また社会的なさまざまな目的をもって身体に直接，装飾的加工を施す慣習。中でも審美的な目的によるものが最も一般的といえるが，身体装飾の多様な形態は，審美的基準についての文化の相対性を如実に示している。身体装飾はボディ･ペインティングなどの一時的装飾と，入墨，抜歯その他各種のいわゆる身体変工を行う永続的装飾とに分けられるが，ここでは前者のみを扱う。後者については〈入墨〉〈身体変工〉〈抜歯〉〈瘢痕文身〉の項をそれぞれ参照されたい。
