The practice of applying decorative treatment directly to the body for a variety of aesthetic, religious, and social purposes. Although aesthetic purposes are the most common, the variety of forms of body decoration clearly shows the relativity of cultures regarding aesthetic standards. Body decoration can be divided into temporary decoration such as body painting and permanent decoration such as tattooing, tooth extraction, and various other so-called body modifications, but this article will only cover the former. For the latter, please see the entries for "tattooing," "body modification," "tooth extraction," and "body scarring," respectively. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
