A mountain range that runs parallel to the Lebanon Mountains along the Mediterranean Sea, across the Bekaa Plateau, and forms a natural border with Syria. In Arabic, it is called Jibāl Lubnān al‐Sharqīya. Although it is lower than the Lebanon Mountains, its topography is complex, with its central part being a terraced rocky desert of chalky limestone with an average elevation of 2,250 m and a width of 30 km. It extends southward, decreasing in elevation and then rising again to Mount Hermon. The western slope drops sharply to the Bekaa Plateau, so there is less water, arable land, and inhabitants than the eastern slope facing the Syrian Desert.
